Bringing Buba & Butu to Life: Illustrating a Children's Book Series

Bringing Buba & Butu to Life: Illustrating a Children's Book Series

Ola Jakubus

There’s something incredibly special about bringing a story to life through illustration. Over the past year, I had the joy of working on a project that’s very close to my heart – a beautifully written children’s book series called Buba & Butu, created by my dear friend Martyna Mauricio.

Martyna is a wonderful Polish mum of two, and a well-loved voice in the world of motherhood content on Instagram and TikTok @martynamauricio. Inspired by her own family life, her children, and her two fluffy Chow Chow dogs, she dreamed up a magical world for little ones, and I was lucky enough to be the illustrator who helped bring it to life.

From Family Life to the Pages of a Book

The first book in the series, Buba i Butu: Świąteczna Niespodzianka, is a heartwarming festive tale featuring two adorable Chow Chows named Buba and Butu. Named by Martyna’s son Leon, the dogs are the stars of this gentle story for toddlers and young children.

Set in a cosy, wintry world, the book introduces emotional intelligence to little readers through soft storytelling, festive magic, and the comforting presence of animals. It teaches the importance of connection and kindness – that presence, not presents, is what truly matters at Christmas.

The book was co-written by Martyna and her mum, Iwona Jacek, a pedagogue, making it a beautiful cross-generational collaboration. I had the joy of illustrating every page and creating the official website too: bubaibutu.com.

Although the book is currently only available in Polish, an English translation is on the way. I truly can’t wait for more children (and parents) to enjoy this sweet, thoughtful series.

Creating the World of Buba & Butu

Illustrating this story felt like stepping into a warm hug. I absolutely loved designing the characters of Buba and Butu, capturing their fluffiness, gentle expressions, and lovable personalities. The story also introduces a few woodland friends, and I had so much fun creating their cosy world surrounded by nature, snowflakes, and twinkling festive lights.

As a children’s book illustrator, it’s always my goal to reflect not just the words on the page, but the deeper meaning behind them. In this case, it was about showing warmth, empathy, and emotional connection in a way that feels comforting to young children.

We’re now working on the second book in the series, which will be launching very soon. I’m already in love with the new characters and moments we’re creating, and I can’t wait to share more.
